Hisako was the second daughter of Juichi and Hide Soeda, and the elder sister of Eiko.
Immediately after graduating from the Second Prefectural Girls’ High School (now Takehaya Senior High School), she married Takizo Ishizuka, the second son of the Ishizuka family, who owned mandarin orange orchards in Okitsu. At the time, she was 17 by the traditional kazeidoshi reckoning—which would be just 15 years old by today’s standards.
Takizo was an employee of the Bank of Japan.
